This museum opened at its present location in 1983. It was originally founded in 1967 as the Hokkaido Museum of Art, with 220 works by the Sapporo-born painter Kotaro Migishi (1903 – 1934) that were donated by his family. In addition to exhibiting Migishi’s works, the museum hosts concerts and programs for children. In 2017 the museum celebrated its 50th anniversary by adopting the nickname “mima,” chosen in a public contest, and expanded its activities with the launch of exhibitions featuring young artists.
