This museum opened in July 1977 in central Sapporo based on the concept of creating a general modern art museum with both regional and international dimensions. It works to enrich its collection, offers various exhibitions and educational programs, and engages in research as a cultural center in Hokkaido and as a place of relaxation and learning that brings to everyone the enriching experience of art appreciation.

Hokkaido Museum, a.k.a. Mori no Charenga, is a prefectural museum featuring the nature, history, and culture of Hokkaido. It investigates and researches the relationship between the natural environment and people, the culture of the indigenous Ainu people, and the lives of immigrants from Japan’s main island of Honshu. It also collects and preserves materials that are precious treasures of the people of Hokkaido, while organizing exhibitions, educational programs, and other events.
